Life In Seattle
we have made a lot of changes in our lifestyle, priorities, hobbies and soon family. before you all get too excited, we are planning on adding to our family by getting another dog. Yes, in fact today we are going to look at a rescue of another plott hound. skip has been such a great dog we have decided that he needs a companion. stay tuned for more. living in the "PNW" short for pacific north west, has given us a better appreciation for the outdoors and life in general. when we first moved here, we definetly had the wow factor. just the beuty of the landscape, mountains, rivers and lakes are just amazing out here. it took us awhile to settle on a place to call home but living in temp housing sure helped us figure out where was what and what was where. we where literally minutes from signing a lease in redmond ridge, which by the way is a beautiful area nestled in the local foothills. it would have been a brand new home with literally only a yard big enough to a couple tables. not real suitable for a dog. i had found a house in carnation awhile back and decided to take a gander at it before we signed the lease. tracey was still at work and we had about an hour before we where to meet with the realestate agent to sign the lease in redmond ridge. once i arrived and saw the house, i was hooked. the house was beautiful and the yard was huge, half acre huge. i called the agent and he agreed to meet with us about two hours later. yes an hour after we where suppose to sign the lease. i called and put that off another day. once the agent arrived we where both happy with the house and location. the rest is history at this point.
we have since met many people and made some great friends. thanks to hal and michelle signett, we have managed to become quite comfortable in this little town and met many new people. you see, hal and michelle owned this house we where renting. they are great people and very gracious and down to earth. they have also lived here for the past 20 plus years, so they know everyone!. over the past year we have enjoyed many social gatherings with them and their friends. including some texas holdem parties and casino nights.
tracey has adapted very well as i have. she has come to appreciate the quietness and rural sanctuary of our home. we live nestled in the foothills of the cascade mountains in a small down of just 2000. our home borders a green belt that travels 11 miles in one direction and 9 miles in the other. about a half mile down the trail is the tolt river, which come september salmon can be found spawning over the next couple of months. another half mile down river, the tolt joins the snoqualmie river which has great steelhead fishing year round. we live just about 11 miles from lake sammamish, 15 miles from lake washington and 10 miles from snoqualmie pass. this past year we purchased a boat to enjoy all this water.
this coming year we are planning several great outdoor adventures. first off, a trip to mount st helens. we are also planning a couple good hikes through the local mountain passes. another great trip or two into the san juan islands. oh, by the way they are just about an hour and a half away by boat and truck. we are also planning on spending alot of time on lake washington and lake sammamish with our boat.
life is just simpler here, more relaxed and slower paced. it is however, more expensive then chicago in most areas but we are adapting from sticker shock slowely. stick around and check back often. i will be updating the site and adding more blogs as time passes. feel free to join in on our blogs and comment or just stay in touch.

The Seattle Blackburn Family
It’s been a while since I took the time to write a blog post, and I’ve really been leaving it to Ed. This blog forum is really his to share his perspective and experiences as he (and really we) go through this cancer “journey”. I’m really not sure why it’s called a “journey”. A “journey” to me is something that is fun and exciting – nothing I would use to describe the past several months. But alas, I digress… So today is the day. A certain moment that we have been waiting for, as today is the day that Ed has his t-cells infused into his body to fight off his cancer. It’s quite a remarkable thing that the doctors are trying, and most of the medical team here is incredibly excited; almost as excited as we are. We have been talking about this clinical trial since our first visit with Dr. Pollack (Ed’s oncologist) at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance way back in September. It is something that has carried our hope and faith all of these months as we have continually experienced setbacks time and time again. And while our eyes are wide open – this is in fact a phase 1 clinical trial, and Ed is patient 1 to go through it – we are incredibly hopeful for GREAT results, and not only for our future, but the future of others as well. The more I research and read about advanced t-cell immunotherapy, the more I am....
Finally some good news: April 11th 2012
Over the past several weeks, I have been trying to recuperate from to side effects of no longer taking steroids. You see, after having the gamma knife and the resulting blood clot, the brain reacted to the inflammation which caused severe migraine headaches. The Nurse Practitioner put me on Dexamethasone which is a steroid to stop the inflammation and prevent the brain from reacting to the blood clot. It was prescribed at a low dose, and then increased to a much higher dose, then a week of tapering off. The last time I took Dex was the day before my birthday, March 26th 2012. On March 27th, the family and I traveled to Leavenworth WA and spent the day together, snowmobiling, then wine tasting later that day. We finished off the day with a nice Dinner and drove the two hour ride home. It was a great day. The following several days, I was miserable, tired, sore and physically weak. We thought, it was just from the active day snowmobiling. Turns out, this is all from the side effects of coming off the steroids. I went from feeling like superman for a week, to feeling like the 90lb weakling. Since then, my cough has retuned, I have body aches, night sweats and shortness of breath. Mentally, this has been very difficult. We thought we had made a turn for the better, felt great, good strength and stamina. Then this! On April 8th, we had our CT Scans scheduled. This time....
